HEALTH

By : elvis asige

Here are some key points about health. More detail is in the main article.

Health can be defined as physical, mental, and social wellbeing, and as a resource for living a full life.

It refers not only to the absence of disease, but the ability to recover and bounce back from illness and other problems.

Factors for good health include genetics, the environment, relationships, and education.

A healthful diet, exercise, screening for diseases, and coping strategies can all enhance a person’s health.

What is health?

Health is not just absence of disease but a state of overall wellbeing.

Health is not just absence of disease but a state of overall wellbeing.

In 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health with a phrase that is still used today.

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” WHO, 1948.

In 1986, the WHO further clarified that health is:

“A resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.”

This means that health is a resource to support an individual’s function in wider society. A healthful lifestyle provides the means to lead a full life.

More recently, researchers have defined health as the ability of a body to adapt to new threats and infirmities. They base this on the idea that modern science has dramatically increased human awareness of diseases and how they work in the last few decades.

Types

Mental and physical health are the two most commonly discussed types of health. We also talk about “spiritual health,” “emotional health,” and “financial health,” among others. These have also been linked to lower stress levels and mental and physical wellbeing.

Physical health

In a person who experiences physical health, bodily functions are working at peak performance, due not only to a lack of disease, but also to regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate rest. We receive treatment, when necessary, to maintain the balance.

Physical wellbeing involves pursuing a healthful lifestyle to decrease the risk of disease. Maintaining physical fitness, for example, can protect and develop the endurance of a person’s breathing and heart function, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition.

Physical health and well-being also help reduce the risk of an injury or health issue. Examples include minimizing hazards in the workplace, practicing safe sex, practicing good hygiene, or avoiding the use of tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs.

Mental health

Mental health refers to a person’s emotional, social, and psychological wellbeing. Mental health is as important as physical health to a full, active lifestyle.

It is harder to define mental health than physical health, because, in many cases, diagnosis depends on the individual’s perception of their experience. With improvements in testing, however, some signs of some types of mental illness are now becoming “visible” in CT scans and genetic testing.

Mental health is not only the absence of depression, anxiety, or another disorder.

It also depends on the ability to:

enjoy life

bounce back after difficult experiences

achieve balance

adapt to adversity

feel safe and secure

achieve your potential

Physical and mental health are linked. If chronic illness affects a person’s ability to complete their regular tasks, this may lead to depression and stress, for example, due to money problems.

A mental illness such as depression or anorexia nervosa can affect body weight and function.

It is important to approach “health” as a whole, rather than its different types.

Factors for good health

Health depends on a wide range of factors.

A person is born with a range of genes, and in some people, an unusual genetic pattern can lead to a less-than-optimum level of health.

Environmental factors play a role. Sometimes the environment alone is enough to impact health. Other times, an environmental trigger can cause illness in a person who is genetically susceptible.

Access to healthcare plays a role, but the WHO suggests that the following factors may have a bigger impact on health than this:

where a person lives

the state of the surrounding environment

genetics

income

education level

relationships with friends and family

These can be summarized as:

The social and economic environment: Including how wealthy a family or community is

The physical environment: Including parasites that exist in an area, or pollution levels

The person’s characteristics and behaviors: Including the genes that a person is born with and their lifestyle choices

According to the WHO, the higher a person’s socioeconomic status (SES), the more likely they are to enjoy good health, a good education, a well-paid job, afford good healthcare when their health is threatened.

People with a lower socioeconomic status are more likely to experience stresses related to daily living, such as financial difficulties, marital disruption, and unemployment, as well as social factors, such as marginalization and discrimination. All these add to the risk of poor health.

A low socio-economic status often means less access to healthcare. People in developed countries with universal healthcare services have longer life expectancies than people in developed countries without universal healthcare.

Cultural issues can affect health. The traditions and customs of a society and a family’s response to them can have a good or bad impact on health. For example, around the Mediterranean, people are more likely to consume high levels of fruits, vegetables, and olive, and to eat as a family, compared with cultures with a high consumption of fast food.

How a person manages stress will affect health. People who smoke, drink, or take drugs to forget their problems are likely to have more health problems later than someone who combats stress through a healthful diet and exercise.

Men and women are prone to different health factors. In societies where women earn less than men or are less educated, they may be at greater risk than men for poor health.

Preserving health

The best way to maintain health is to preserve it through a healthful lifestyle, rather than waiting until we are sick to put things right.

This state of enhanced well-being is referred to as wellness.

The McKinley Health Center at the University of Illinois IL defines wellness as:

“A state of optimal well-being that is oriented toward maximizing an individual’s potential. This is a life-long process of moving towards enhancing your physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, and environmental well-being.”

Wellness promotes an active awareness of and participation in health, as an individual and in the community.

Maintaining wellness and optimal health is a lifelong, daily commitment.

Steps that can help us maximize our health include:

a balanced, nutritious diet, sourced as naturally as possible

regular exercising

screening for diseases that may present a risk

learning to manage stress

engaging in activities that provide purpose and connection to others

maintaining a positive outlook and appreciating what you have

defining a value system, and putting it into action

Peak health will be different for each person, and how you achieve wellness may be different from how someone else does.

It may not be possible to avoid disease completely, but doing as much as we can to develop resilience and prepare the body and mind to deal with problems as they arise is a step we can all take.

Reasons as to why people involves to drug abuse and leading to a poor life.

1.Poverty-Is the most aspect that some people face which makes them decide involving themselves into drugs which later makes them live a poor life due to drug abuse.

2.Bad companies-Mostly happens in schools where by a student can decide to join a group of students as he or she doesn’t know their behaviour. This will make that student to engage him or herself to drugs and at the end his or her life will be misarable.

If your partner is lying to you, you’ll notice these 3 things

By : Job Wanjala

Lies build distrust in relationships.

It is tough to date someone who is ever lying to you.

A relationship where lies are common is like a house of cards.

A good partner will always speak the truth no matter the circumstances.

1. His/her stories do not add up

 Lies are never consistent.

If your partner is a liar,  all of his or her stories never make sense.

Most of the liars exaggerate things hence making it difficult to trust them.

2. He/she goes missing in action more often

Liars never want anyone to understand them.

Your partner is a pathological liar if he/she is ever missing in action whenever you need him or her.

These people’s lives are full of lies, and you can never understand them.

3. His or her body language speaks a different thing

A sudden change in your partner’s body language could mean he or she is telling a lie.

Most liars change the looks on their faces to hoodwink you.

He/she will behave strangely whenever she wants to tell a lie.

When you notice unexpected changes in his or her body language, know that lies are on the way.

Campus vibe: bachelors turned into bucherers

By : culistus masika

Over a couple of month Kenyan campus had gone viral due to alarming increase in students brutality. University  students have recklesslessy lost there lives in some of contradicting incidences .For example recently a student from Thika travelled all the way from Murang’a to University of Eldoret to his alleged fiancé and brutally attacked her with an axe just because he heard a rumors of her cheating him, the incident left many dumbfounded .

More so a  student from Migori county was found dead in a forest cause of death indicating some cuts on her body showing that she was brutally murdered. We spoke with Milcent Adour a student from university of Nairobi taking bachelor of sociology and cycology “ its so sad that our bachelors have turned into butcherers this because mistrust that have aroused among most relationships ,due to most students have turned school life into dating between them and rich men.

“Sources also revealed that most old rich men spoil young youths with lots of cash and  gifts. This is tarnishing the education in universities .Police had been left with many unanswered cases. This has made love to go sour simply because of cheating among spouses in relationships .

now the big question :

Do you support campus relationships?

LOST CANDLES

By : John Thiongo

Have me,standing  guard on the empty chores of love.
This empty fading echoes of you!!
I hold my heavy heart close to my crushing ribs
Screaming echoes of your words frozen in time, I hate
I hate the swollen dripping tears for they betray my feeling for you

The emptz days I face
The nights I lie in wait for you  like a stupid fool
Can you feel the teary strike my broken heart
Can you feel the silince in my heart

Mine love lost in the shadows of distance
My broken glasses that I try t o keep together
I miss your gentle rogue kisses under the moonlight candle
Your melting caress that left me frozen in time
My discoloured heart takes  it last breath of love in a candle light

CREATIVITY:HOW TO UNLOCK YOUR HIDDEN CREATIVE GENIUS

By : Shirlynn Kanguha

Creative thinking is not about generating something new from a blank slate but rather about taking what is already present and combining those bits and pieces in a way that has not been done previously.

All great ideas follow a similar creative process. In 1940, an advertising executive named James Webb Young published a short guide titled, A Technique for Producing Ideas. Young believed the process of creative connection always occurred in five steps.
THECREATIVITYPROCESS
1.)Gathernewmaterials:
At first, you learn. During this stage you focus on:

a.) Learning specific material directly related to your task.

b.) Learning general material by becoming fascinated with a wide range of concepts.

2.)Thoroughlyworkoverthematerialsinyourmind:
During this stage you have to examine what you have learned by looking at the facts from different angles and experimenting with fitting various ideas together.

3.)Stepawayfromtheproblem:
Next, you have to put the problem out of your mind completely and go do something else that can excite you and energize you.

4.)Letyourideareturntoyou:
At some point, but only after you have stopped thinking about it your idea will come back to you with a flash of insight and renewed energy.

5.)Shapeanddevelopyourideabasedonfeedback:
For any idea to succeed, you must release it out into the world, submit into the criticism, and adapt it as needed.

HOWTOBECREATIVE
Step1:Giveyourselfpermissiontocreatejunk
In any creative endeavor, you have to give yourself permission to create junk. There is no way around it. Sometimes you have to write various terrible pages just to discover that you have written a good sentence.
Creating something useful and compelling is like being a gold minner. You have to sift through pounds of dirt, rocks and silt just to find a speck of gold in the middle of it all. Bits and pieces of genius will find their way to you, if you give yourself permission to let the must flow.

Step2:Createon aschedule
No single act will uncover more creative genius than forcing yourself to create consistently. Practicing your craft over and over is the only way to become descent at it. The person who sits around theorizing about what a best-selling book looks like, will never write unlike the person who shows up everyday and puts all their efforts and hands on the keyboard—they are learning how to do the work.
If you want to do your best creative work, then don’t leave it up to choice. You need to take the decision making out of it. Set a schedule for your work.

Step 3:Finishsomething
Finish something. Anything. Stop researching, planning, and preparing to do the work. It doesn’t matter how good or bad it is. You don’t need to set the world on fire with your first try. You just need to prove to yourself that you have what it takes to produce something.
There are no artists, athletes, entrepreneurs, or scientists who become great by half-finishing their work. Stop debating what you should make and just make something.

Step4:Stopjudgingyourownwork
Everyone struggles to create great art. Even great artists.
Anyone who creates something on a consistent basis will begin to judge their work.
It is natural to judge your own work. It is natural to feel disappointed that your creation isn’t as wonderful as you hoped it would be, or that you’re not getting any better at your craft. But the key is not to letting your discontent prevent you from continuing to do the work.
You have to practice enough self compassion to not let self-judgement take over. Don’t let judgement prevent delivery.

Step 5:Holdyourselfaccountable
Share your work publicly. It will hold you accountable to creating your own work. And when you see others connect with what you create, it will inspire you and make you care more.
Sometimes sharing your work means you have to deal with haters and critics. But more often that’s not, the only thing that happens is that you rally the people who believe the same things you believe, are excited about, or who support the work you believe in—who wouldn’t want that?
The world needs people who put creative work out into the world. What seems simple to you is often brilliant to someone else. But you’ll never know that unless you choose to share.

HOWTOFINDYOURCREATIVEGENIUS
Finding your creative genius is easy:do the work, finish something, get feedback, find ways to improve, show up again tomorrow. Repeat for years.
Inspiration only reveals itself after perspiration.

Why Kenya as a country might be heading to a different direction

By : Joakim Kipkorir

With all the politics and not forgetting the big elephant in the room, that is corruption and no much action by government, the country’s future is now unpredictable. This has raised concerns from the religious leaders and Kenyans at large. Kenyans are now tired of the corruption scandals and now want actions and not just promises to bring corrupt individuals to book. The president should come out strongly and deal with corruption with immediate effect. Kenyans are also tired of the recent politicization of corruption cases by political leaders. The 2022 politics seems to be diverting the attention of leaders especially those in power. Every leader in one way or another chips into the topic in almost each and every gathering.
For sure, the president had shown good leadership by starting to fight corruption just after the famous ‘handshake’  to all Kenyans with an aim of building bridges after the disputed general elections. With Raila Odinga as the runner up during the elections and president Uhuru Kenyatta coming together, they started on a high note in fighting corruption  but now, they seem to be sailing to a different direction.
Many Kenyans have now questioned Raila’s position in the government. This comes days after he accompanied the president to China to borrow loans. This raised Kenyan’s eyebrows, who feel that the loans are becoming unbearable and some may may even end up in corruption scandals like the ones being witnessed in the country. On a light  note some Kenyans who were tired of the loans were glad that the government did not get the funds from China. Some even went ahead and questioned the millions  spent during the unsuccessful trip to China. With the rise in the cost of living, the citizens feel like they have to go deep into their pockets to put food on the table.

The government should deal with the corruption issues for once even before asking for more loans. The loans   should also be sustainable and can be paid back on time.
